AOACChinasection successfully hosted symposium and training program on vitamins analysis using AOAC and Chinese national methods

On April 25th-26th 2013, AOAC China Section successfully held symposium and training program on vitamins analysis in infant formula and adult nutritionals at Synutra laboratory, Qingdao,China. The purpose of this activity is to improve the analytical performance of vitamins for Chinese analytical community, and to know more about the AOAC SPIFAN update.

More than 80 scientists participated in the symposium and training, including chair of AOAC SPIFAN, author of AOAC Official method, committee members of Chinese GB methods, and scientists from Chinese governments, food industries, commercial labs and test kits and instrument manufactories. They are representatively from 36 organizations, 15 provinces of the whole country.

Dr. Lei Bao, president of AOAC China section, director of biotoxins reference laboratory, AQSIQ, chaired the meeting and made the welcoming address. She briefed the purpose of the symposium and training.  Dr. DARRYL Sullivan, Chair of AOAC SPIFAN project, gave two presentations on AOAC SPIFAN update and AOAC dispute resolution method for vitamin A, E, B12, D, inositol and nucleotides, respectively. Professor Yuguo Fang, from national dairy test center, compared methods of using the AOAC certified method and GB method to analyze the vitamins in infant formula. Dr. Yanhai Zhang, from ThermoChina, introduced vitamin A, D and E in infant formula by on line SPE-HPLC. Ms. Xiqing Wang, director of Synutra lab, presented quality control measures in dairy industry Lab. Ms. Claire Milligan, one of author of AOAC 2011.08, from R-Biopharm Rhône, introduced using immunoaffinity column to analyze vitamin B12 in infant formula and adult nutritionals. Dr. Hongwei Zhang, from Shandong CIQ, introduced the guideline of the quality control measures in analytical laboratories. Professor Yiping Ren, from Zhejiang CDC, compared AOAC official methods and Chinese GB methods in analysis of vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin K1, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 in infant formula and adult nutritionals.

The second day, a hand-on training for AOAC official method 2011.08, using liquid chromatography/UV detection with immunoaffinity extraction to analyze vitamin B12, was given to the participants.  The training included reagents and standards preparation, sample extraction, column purification and concentration, setting up of HPLC condition, result analyze and discussion.

The symposium and training not only improved the analytical performance of vitamins, but built a bridge for technical communication and cooperation among the international organizations, governments, official laboratories, commercial laboratories, food industries, instruments and test kits manufactories, which will help to promote the development and revision of standards on infant formula and adult nutritionals, and protect the rights of consumers and enterprises. The comments of the Chinese scientists in using AOAC SPIFAN methods are encouraged to submit to AOAC by the AOAC China Section.
